Well I held you like a lover
Happy hands and your elbow in the appropriate place

And we ignored our others, happy plans
For that delicate look upon your face

Our bodies moved and hardened
Hurting parts of your garden
With no room for a pardon
In a place where no one knows what we have done

Do you come
Together ever with him?
And is he dark enough?
Enough to see your light?
And do you brush your teeth before you kiss?
Do you miss my smell?
And is he bold enough to take you on?
Do you feel like you belong?
And does he drive you wild?
Or just mildly free?
What about me?

Well you held me like a lover
Sweaty hands
And my foot in the appropriate place

And we use cushions to cover
Happy glands
In the mild issue of our disgrace

Our minds pressed and guarded
While our flesh disregarded
The lack of space for the light-hearted
In the boom that beats our drum

Well I know I make you cry
And I know sometimes you wanna die
But do you really feel alive without me?
If so, be free
If not, leave him for me
Before one of us has accidental babies
For we are in love

Do you come
Together ever with him?
Is he dark enough?
Enough to see your light?
Do you brush your teeth before you kiss?
Do you miss my smell?
And is he bold enough to take you on?
Do you feel like you belong?
And does he drive you wild?
Or just mildly free?

What about me?
What about me?

I woke up off this morning. I felt stressed and fretful and I had funky dreams that involved lots of people walking past me in corridors and saying things I could not remember later. I looked outside and it looked normal. I sat on the edge of the bed at 6am and my tummy hurt and I wanted to cry. Even after coffee and a shower, I felt like something was wrong.

I just looked at the date and I finally got it. Six years ago today my best friend committed suicide. I took the call at about 5am that morning and I remember sitting down hard on the floor and feeling dizzy. How could someone who was so much a part of my life be gone that fast and by her own hand?

That was a tough holiday season. For years, Shannon was the one who had decorated the Christmas tree with me and Zach. We would always get her a penguin to put on our tree and she always brought Zach a new stuffed penguin for under the tree. She was a police officer and for a few years she had morning duty outside Zach’s daycare where he was a total celebrity because the police officer was “his best friend”. She smuggled a huge chocolate iced coffee into me a few hours after my hysterectomy and left me a stuffed frog that sang with a red rose so when I woke up it was the first thing I saw. We watched horror movies together (her favorite not mine) and laughed at me when I hid my eyes. She came to dinner several nights a week and was a part of my daily routine. I sat in the hospital for 7 hours on Christmas Eve when Zach was a baby and when she was taken in due to an accident. I made her laugh, hugged her and forced food when she was going through relationship issues. She collected penguins – every kind of penguin imaginable. She rode motorcycles and I used to tell her that being in the car with her was like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disney. We laughed so hard so many times and once coffee came out of her nose. When I was having a bad day at work, she would show up and take me to lunch. I held her hand and let her talk about her crazy days. I worried every time I heard that there was a shooting in her district. I took her to Gay Pride Day at Disney and kept introducing her to women I had started talking to so that she would meet someone nice. She interrogated every boyfriend I had to be sure that they would be right for me. She was my constant through some of the hardest years of my life.

I was supposed to perform the wedding for her and her partner that spring and instead, I performed her funeral. I went into the house after the police were gone and the cleaners were just leaving – only about 12 hours after she died. I was so upset because I could not smell her over the cleaning fluid that they had used to get the blood out. Even 2 years after she died when I would visit the house, it still smelled like that awful cleaning fluid. Shannon in the heat of an argument with her partner put a gun to her own head and pulled the trigger. I stared at the bullet hole in the wall and wondered what the fuck it all meant. I scrubbed at some spots that the cleaners had missed. I adjusted the Christmas tree that was turned over from the paramedics getting a stretcher in the door and saw the presents with my name and Zach’s names on them. I picked her clothes out. I dug out her dress uniform to hang next to the closed casket. I brought all the personal effects to the funeral home. I sat with her mother and held her hand as she sobbed hysterically – Shannon’s father had died ten years earlier and her sister had left home as a teenager so Shannon was all she had left. I made sure noone took too much valium. I stood in front of 200 people and read a eulogy and 2 weeks later performed a smaller more personal funeral after the cremation. I greeted the neverending line of police officers, some who I knew and so many I did not – they all came for Shannon. She had been a member of the police force for over 18 years. I kept it together until Mike came – he had been the only partner in the force that Shannon had. We stared at each other and he started crying and kept whispering “Why?” I kept saying, “I don’t know, I just don’t know” and I didn’t. I didn’t know – I didn’t understand and I still don’t. There is still a hole in my life that is Shannon sized.

So this is dedicated to you, Shannon. I miss you almost every day. I am so sad that you are not here. I am so sorry that I was not there that night. I am still a little pissed and when we catch back up one day, you get a kick in the shins and the biggest hug in the world.

As always, the few weeks before Samhain were a rock and roll of astounding proportions, but in a very good way.

Postings have been sparse but will be picked up as I have relocated cross country and find myself in the valley of Utah. Figuratively and literally! aka Happy Valley and I can certainly see why.

Mountains on all sides and I am in a beautiful and pastoral location between these amazing peaks and Utah Lake. There are winding paths and cavernous caves to explore. I can’t wait! And we had our first snow this weekend. Relief from the heat and humidity of Florida and more active energetically than Phoenix. It is … great!

Space was limited and as with all moves, I am always interested in which of the deities makes the bid for the initial move.

Poppy would not be left behind and saved us a few times on the drive cross country. He is here and happy, although a bit cold, so we keep him warm with frequent toasts, candles and conversations.

Hekate, of course and She was up in time for Samhain. She remains Her regal and unflinching Self.

Oya here and loving the wind as it blasts through the mountain passes. I can hear Her deep laugh as the trees shake. Her Nine Skirts will come in handy this winter but She seems to be reasonably content. She generously contributed Her clove cigarettes for the house cleansing.

Obatala in His calm and steady presence. I look at Him and feel the peace of this place.

Lakshmi shook out Her coins and several job contracts have manifested quickly.

Shiva looks with grand approval at the peaks from His perch.

Ganesh staked out several places in the house but His favorite seems to be the kitchen – He can see the doors and all the action. His abundance has proved overflowing as we have been cooking every night and creating wonderful meals.

Sex Buddha carved out a little niche for himself in the southwest corner but the kitties insist on pulling off his altar cloth and curling up in it. He grins through it all.

I unpacked Oshun and She blew me a kiss and attached Herself to Emi and has a beautiful shrine in their room.

And Shakti…in all of Her manifestations…She claimed multiple locations, as well, and is spreading Her creativity to all in the house.

I am blessed. I have my son, wonderful friends, fuzzy faces, and blessings from the Gods. I made a brief initial contact with the local OTO body so that I can get to a Mass soon. They seem very active.

Contract work, blogs, freelance writing and evolution.

The Wheel has turned and I am in a good place. AUMN.

I will dance
The dance of dying days
And sleeping life.

I will dance
In cold, dead leaves
A bending, whirling human flame.

I will dance
As the Horned God rides
Across the skies.

I will dance
To the music of His hounds
Running, baying in chorus.

I will dance
With the ghosts of those
Gone before.

I will dance
Between the sleep of life
And the dream of death.

I will dance
On Samhain’s dusky eye,
I will dance.

hovering on the edge of consciousness
(or so I thought)
you were leaning over me
I could smell you and feel
your lips brush my hair
my cheeks
my lips
are you real?
shhhhhh, you say
and you smiled really sad and
you were wearing blue

floating between here and there
(or so I thought)
your eyes pierced me as if
I was not already paralyzed and
your hair was dark and you had a long goatee
and you stood closed
are you real?
you turned to stride away and
you were wearing red

dreaming and waking
(or so I thought)
the brown and white caftan whirled around you
so close that my hair fell into my eyes
and you shoved it carelessly back as
you kissed me hard
are you real?
I felt your pause and then you were gone
wearing brown and white

remembering the future
(or so I thought)
you stood in the doorway and looked
so familiar
my heart ached and my hand would not
listen to my brain
to reach out
are you real?
the door closed and
you were wearing the miles that separate us

dancing through the past
(or so I thought)
you gathered me into your arms
so close
I could not see your face
but sank into the safety
are you real?
and I could close my eyes
and we were wearing each other

me 8/24/08

“What if, a millennium from now, you are exhumed dressed completely in gold,
every limb, every finger encircled with sun,
metal twisted into snakes and flowers?

What if they find you wrapped in a shroud of sliver meshed like spider webs?
Or covered with a boulder big as your self?
Or beheaded, your skull set in a niche to hold candles,
a sconce behind you like a halo?

What if they find you were burned, and traces of ceremony show it was at dusk,
and that you rode a chariot or a boat into the afterlife?
Or if they find threads of a cocoon that held you,
the only thing except your bones to survive so long?

If so…what would they say?

This is the body of a woman hale but bent with age,
this is the body of a woman who bore many children,
this is the body of a woman who lost several teeth,
this is the body of a woman who lived on chestnuts and occasional lambs meat?

This is the body of a woman, they would say,
and from a millennium of death, how could you say back:

Not just a young girl dead in childbirth
But a woman blasted from the impact of creation,

Not just a woman in her prime
but a Mother of the tribe.

Not just an old woman
But a hallowed elder.

Not a woman,
But a Priestess.

Not a woman,
But a Queen.

Not a woman
But a vessel for the energy of the Goddess.

This is what they hide from us:

40,000 years ago, a crone was buried nested in the arms of her young lover
who killed himself upon her death.

Behold.
Behold.
Behold.”

Unknown

Immovable tower come crashing down
An uncertain hour in this little town
Will you step to the edge
Move on in the dark
Let a new man have your old heart
You could spend your whole life putting blocks back in place
With each trebling hand covering up the face
That seeks high places
Greedy dragonfly
So show a new man your old smile
Indomitable portrait that hangs in your mind
Waiting to be unveiled in your darkest time
So step to the edge
Move on in the dark
Let a new man have your old heart
Let a new man have your old heart
